Nervous System Support

Understand your stress patterns, build awareness of your body and emotions, and develop greater capacity and choice

Understanding your nervous system can change your relationship with your symptoms

When you’ve been living with persistent pain or other symptoms for a long time, it can be difficult to understand why your body continues to respond in the way it does.

Nervous system support offers a practical way to explore the relationship between your symptoms, stress, emotions, thoughts and nervous system.

It isn’t about telling you that your symptoms are “all in your head”. Your symptoms are real. They are experiences created by your brain and body, and the nervous system can learn patterns of protection that become persistent.

From understanding to experience

Learning about the nervous system can be an important first step.

Together, we can explore your own patterns and begin to notice what happens when your system feels safe, under pressure or threatened.

We may work with:

  • nervous system education
  • recognising your individual stress responses
  • developing greater awareness of sensations, emotions and thoughts
  • building resources and supportive practices
  • learning ways to work with activation, overwhelm or shutdown
  • developing greater capacity to stay present with difficult sensations and emotions
  • exploring patterns of stress, pressure, perfectionism or over-protection
  • gently experimenting with new responses

The aim isn’t to keep yourself permanently calm.
It’s to develop greater awareness, choice and capacity in how you respond.

Resourcing comes first

Before we can explore anything more challenging, it can be important to develop a stronger sense of safety and internal resources. This might include simple practices involving breath, movement, grounding, attention or noticing what helps you feel more settled and supported.

We go slowly. Small changes matter.

The aim is not to add another list of things you should be doing.
It’s about discovering what genuinely supports your nervous system.

Nervous system support within my wider work

Nervous system support is how I describe the practical, nervous-system-informed work I offer as a SIRPA Practitioner, particularly for people living with persistent pain and other persistent symptoms.

It can support the development of awareness, resources and capacity, whether this is the focus of our work or part of a broader therapeutic process.

Somatic EMDR is a thread through my work, bringing structure to the therapeutic process while allowing us to draw on the different strands of my practice according to your needs, capacity and readiness.

You don’t need to decide which approach you need.
We start with you, and the work develops from there.

Who might find nervous system support helpful?

This approach may be particularly helpful if you:

  • live with persistent pain or other ongoing symptoms
  • feel that stress makes your symptoms worse
  • often feel “on edge”, overwhelmed or unable to switch off
  • notice patterns of pushing through or putting pressure on yourself
  • experience shutdown, fatigue or disconnection
  • want to understand your nervous system and how it relates to your symptoms
  • have tried to understand your symptoms but don’t know how to apply that understanding in everyday life

You don’t need to know exactly why your symptoms are happening.
We can start with what you’re noticing now.
